Creative and interactive Spanish immersion.

In this language immersion class, we’ll go on field trips, engage in creative arts activities, play games, read and write and sing… in Spanish! The best way to learn a language is to dive in. Each week we’ll spend the day together playing, learning, laughing, and messing up in a language we’re learning together. We’ll cook and share meals together in Spanish, learning the names of ingredients and figuring out how to follow and give directions.

We’ll go on field trips to visit local community spaces and restaurants, learning about various Spanish-speaking cultures and histories around the world and in our own community. We’ll meet with folks from the Columbia County Sanctuary Movement who are organizing with and for immigrants in our communities, and learn about the issues facing Spanish-speaking immigrants in our own city and county. Writing to pen pals in Spanish-speaking countries will give us a chance to practice our writing and communication. We’ll play games, watch movies, learn the Spanish words to our favorite songs and write songs of our own; create art projects, make media, produce our own teaching tutorials, and perform skits and plays. All en Español!

Throughout all of our games, activities and trips, we’ll build our vocabulary and grammar, develop basic skills in pronunciation and conversation, and hone our ability to communicate across languages when we can’t understand. All Spanish levels welcome.

Why learn Spanish? Spanish is the second-most spoken language in the U.S, and the primary language in many of our closest neighboring countries. In fact, so many people in the U.S. speak Spanish at home that the U.S. is the country with the 2nd largest population of Spanish speakers in the world. In other words, there are more Spanish speakers in the U.S. than in Spain! Being able to speak and understand Spanish is essential: it means being able to connect and communicate with our neighbors.
